Program Outcome 5
Facilitate change to improve quality outcomes.
(Health Care Environment)
The Health Care Environment outcome is the necessity to change to increase quality care in the health care system. The Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) program provided several assignments to complete this outcome. The Key Issues Paper was one of the first written papers in the program to complete this outcome. The purpose of the paper is to address the key issue in nursing education: aligning education with the nursing practice. After researching on the rationale for this topic, ideas for change were incorporated. Other substantial evidence to promote the change were theories to coordinate the efforts. This paper was a great start to the MSN program and allowed me to see the overall program outcomes.
Other avenues to support the Health Care Environment outcome was the Integrating Rural Population with the Medical Community paper. This assignment reviewed health care settings in rural developed areas. The purpose of the paper was researching how legislation plays a key role in the health care community. For rural communities, it is difficult for patients to receive adequate health care services, and legislation can help with these issues.
The Quality and Safety Initiative paper is a study of prevalence in medication errors. The purpose of the paper is to review the Institute of Medicine (IOM) quality and safety initiatives created from the study, how the initiatives impact nursing education, and how nurse educators can incorporate these initiatives into a teaching design for students.
The Vulnerable Population and Emergency Preparedness project focused on the need for emergency preparedness in the healthcare setting. The project provided a health education model and how it pertains to emergency preparedness. A risk assessment tool was created and showed how it pertains to the health care setting. The last objective for this project was to explain the differences in Chemical, Biological, Radiation, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) disasters to improve quality outcomes.
The National League for Nursing (NLN) competencies completed during program outcome four include:
Competency I: Facilitate Learning
Nurse educators are responsible for creating an environment in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings that facilitates student learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes.
Competency II: Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
Nurse Educators recognize their responsibility for helping students develop as nurses and integrate the values and behaviors expected of those who fulfill that role.
Competency V: Function as a Change Agent and Leader
Nurse Educators function as change agents and leaders to create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice.
Competency VI: Pursue Continuous Quality Improvements in the Nurse Educator Role
Nurse Educators recognize that their role is multidimensional and that an ongoing commitment to develop and maintain competence in the role is essential.
Competency VIII: Function Within the Educational Environment
Nurse educators are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice and recognize how political, institutional, social, and economic forces impact their role.
