Program Outcome 4
Translate evidence into the practice of nursing.
(Scholarship for Practice)
Scholarship in nursing is the tool that feeds nurses their knowledge in health care. There are three aspects to scholarship in nursing; theory, research, and practice. Scholarship in nursing dates back to Florence Nightingale where she used data to improve nursing care. The attached three assignments completes the Scholarship for Practice outcome. As a nurse educator, determination is key to scholarly success. In NURS 521, the Self- Determination assignment focused on a group debate. The class was divided into two groups and the subject was Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS). One group was pro-PAS and the other was against PAS. The group I was assigned was pro-PAS. The piece that I debated was a personal scenario, my father. I provided scholarly articles and laws highlighting the critical need to vote pro-PAS.
For the next assignment, I had to create a syllabus for an academic nursing course. I utilized various tools to create a syllabus for a Maternal Health and Childbearing course. I created course outcomes, grading guidelines, learner-centered activities, general course policies, and writing assignments based on a rubric style guideline. Through scholarly research articles, evidence-based practice assignments were created to give students the knowledge they will need for that specific course in the health care setting.
For the curriculum assessment assignment, I chose a rural community college in which I worked as an adjunct faculty member for the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program. This assignment used scholarly articles and statistical data from the college to form an assessment on the ADN program. The Scholarship for Practice paper used a theoretical approach in researching the effectiveness of the ADN program. After reviewing the scholarly articles and data, the ADN program is shown to be functional for the college to continue the program.
The National League for Nursing (NLN) competencies completed during program outcome four include:
Competency IV- Participate in Curriculum Design & Evaluation of Program Outcomes
Nurse educators are responsible for formulating program outcomes and designing curricula that reflect contemporary health care trends and prepare graduates to function effectively in the health care environment.
Competency VII: Engage in Scholarship
Nurse Educators acknowledge that scholarship is an integral component of the faculty role, and that teaching itself is a scholarly activity.
Competency VIII: Function Within the Educational Environment
Nurse educators are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice and recognize how political, institutional, social, and economic forces impact their role.
