Program Outcome 2
Exhibit advanced theoretical and scientific knowledge as a basis for specialty practice.
(Theoretical Base for Practice)
Theoretical Base for Practice provides the application and role to practice as a nurse. The absence of theory would create unsafe practices in the health care environment. In order to apply theory in the health care environment, the nurse must have the knowledge, skills, and attitude to perform this role. The MSN program created specific assignments geared to complete this outcome.
The first order of a nurse is understanding the curriculum map of nursing. A curriculum concept map is an algorithm to help faculty, and institutes provide the best professional and qualified courses for any class. In NURS 601, the assignment was to provide a curriculum concept map incorporating nursing. A curriculum concept map was created for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Ferris State University (FSU). The curriculum concept map included three main sections: faculty, students, and Ferris State University. Sub-categories were created for each section, stating what was needed to complete the program. Without this curriculum concept map, Theoretical Base for Practice cannot be completed for the BSN program.
The second assignment reviewed and showed how prenatal education on breastfeeding affects the initiation rate of breastfeeding mothers as compared to no education on breastfeeding. In order to improve breastfeeding rates, prenatal education to the patient on the theory and application must be performed. When breastfeeding rates are increased, then health promotion is increased to the infant and mother. The data from this assignment was provided on the obstetric unit where I worked, which helped to promote prenatal education to mothers. This data was also implemented in the patient’s prenatal visits in the office.
The last assignment provided an intervention for promoting safety and quality for sleeping and traveling with newborns and children. Based on theory and a personal story, the assignment detailed specific measurements to promote safe sleep and travel in newborns and children. Interventions based on theory were provided on how to accomplish this task. The assignment was difficult on an emotional level, knowing an infant had died due to lack of parental education. Utilizing evidence-based practice in the work setting has allowed the nurses to provide safe quality care to the patient and newborn.
The National League for Nursing (NLN) competencies which were completed in this section are:
Competency I: Facilitate Learning
Nurse Educators are responsible for creating an environment in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings that facilitates student learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes.
Competency II: Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
Nurse Educators recognize their responsibility for helping students develop as nurses and integrate the values and behaviors expected of those who fulfill that role.
Competency V: Function as a Change Agent and Leader
Nurse Educators function as change agents and leaders to create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice
Competency VIII: Function Within the Educational Environment
Nurse Educators are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice and recognize how political, institutional, social, and economic forces impact their role.
